Lot Essay

Stamos began painting what he called his "Sun-Box Series" in 1962 and continued throughout the decade. Geometric and biomorphic shapes with high-keyed fields of color are energized by gestural bars or stripes. His goal was to create highly personal icons and the effect is often intense. This series provided an important link between the sensuous poetic surrealism of his earlier work and the lyrical and the dark expressive abstracts of his later paintings.
