Lot Essay

The offered lot relates closely to designs for similar hall settees dating from the early 18th century. The bold, scrolling design is quite similar to one for a settee illustrated in G. Ferrari, Il Legno e La Mobilia Nell 'Arte Italiana, n.d., p. 346, pl. LIV, and another settee now in the collection of the Nelson-Atkin Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri, illustrated in A. Gonzales-Palacios, Il Tempo Del Gusto, 1986, p. 258 pl. 517.
