Lot Essay

E.W. Cooke had visited Victory at Portsmouth in 1835 and this picture was painted the following year. Commissioned by the engravers Findens for their publication Ports, Harbours and Watering Places (1838), two other paintings from this series are in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London and the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich.

This painting depicts an Admiral of the Red being conveyed to H.M.S. Victory by his crew, with a high-ranking military officer in the barge beside him, being received with a salute. The red flag at the bow of the boat matches the red flag at Victory's mast-head and the ensign at her stern, indicating that the Admiral was therefore 'of the Red'.

Christie's are most grateful to John Munday for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
