Lot Essay

The Château des Tuileries, formerly part of the Louvre Palace complex, served as Parisian residence to the Bourbon monarchy throughout the eighteenth century, and was maintained as such by Napoleon I. The Bourbons returned to the Tuileries during the Restauration, and it was during this period that the offered lot was commissioned. The Tuileries suffered from fires during the civil disturbances of 1870-1871, and was finally razed.
