Lot Essay

The 'Grandmother' pattern adorning this chair is often compared to the laminates designed by the Milan Memphis group. Here, Venturi superimposed two patterns which he held an affinity to -- a tablecloth belonging to the grandmother of his friend and colleague, Robert Schwartz, and parallel stripes -- an underlying motif employed by Jasper Johns.
