Lot Essay

The Doncaster Cup of 1873 was run for by a field of five horses. The pace was set by Savile's other horse, Lilian, whose jockey had been told to make the fastest possible pace. When the first horses passed the stands Lilian and Uhlan were some 30 lengths clear of the rest of the field. Lilian was leading by 10 lengths. Eventually Uhlan beat Lilian by 6 lengths, with the rest of the field almost a furlong behind. Thorn came third, having won 7 out his last 8 races. Uhlan was a brown colt by the Ranger out of La Mechante, and was bred by Mr. Savile. He was foaled in the same year as Savile's Derby winner Cremorne and the second horse Lilian
