CERTIFICACION DE EL ORIGEN Y ARMAS issued in favour of Don Bernabe de Miranda y Galdamez and his wife Donna Ana Maria Camacho, in Spanish, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM
Madrid, 1694
312 x 212mm. i + 56 + i leaves, mostly in gatherings of 4, apparently lacking at least one leaf before f.7 but continuous modern foliation in pencil 1-56, followed here, 21 lines written in red within a frame of two triple fillets containing scrolling foliate and architectural motifs (ff.1v-2v) and, thereafter, 20 lines written in brown ink in an italic hand framed with a pair of double-ruled fillets in brown, justification: 230 x 123mm, FIVE INITIALS, FOUR HEADPIECES, FIVE HALF-PAGE AND ONE FULL-PAGE ARMORIAL MINIATURES, ONE FULL-PAGE GENEALOGICAL TREE, and THREE FULL-PAGE MINIATURES all illuminated in colours and liquid gold and silver, all protected by interleaved pink silk, two papered seals on ff.54v and 55v with official signatures dated 15 April 1694, dedicatory verse pasted onto first silk before f.1 (very slight thumbing to outer edges of some folios, occasionally affecting outer borders). Newly stitched with vellum flyleaves.
This highly decorative and skillfully illustrated document authenticates the right of Don Bernabe, Donna Ana Maria and their descendants to carry the arms of Miranda, Galmadez, Perez, Sevilla and Camacho on their seals, rings, heraldic cloths, paintings, houses, faades, chapels and tombs. The supporting argument takes the form of a history of their antecedants and includes an account of Don Bernabe's adventures and career in the service of the Spanish crown, including his action in Florida and Cuba. The poem of dedication, a flattering play upon the name Miranda written by an unidentified friend, addresses Don Bernabe as Capitan of Cuba and the city of San Christoval de la Havana.
The full-page illuminations are as follows:
f.1 Don Bernabe de Miranda; half-length portrait in a medallion above a wreath with the title supported by two helmet-wearing putti
f.3 Virgin and Child; statue of the Virgin dela Candelaria, a black Virgin holding a candle and the Christ Child
f.4 Equestrian portrait of Charles II of Spain above a cartouche with a landscape
f.5 Genealogical tree of Don Bernabe Perez de Miranda y Galdamez
f.6 Armorial bearings of Don Bernabe with the coat of arms, a crowned lion's head and two dragon supporters on a lobed cartouche above military trophies
