GREGORIUS Nazanzenius (St., 329-389). Carmina, in Greek and Latin. -Historia evangelii secundum Ioannem, in Greek and Latin. Venice: Aldine Academy, June 1504.

Super-chancery 4 (213 x 153mm). Greek and roman type. Aldine device f1 on OO8v. (Lacking A1.8 and AA1.8, some dampstaining, heavier in final 2 leaves, lower margin of and upper margin of index cut away, light finger-soiling on title.) Modern red morocco-backed boards.

This volume forms volume III of Aldus's Poetae Christiani, individual volumes of which were issued in 1501 and 1502. Aldus printed the Greek and Latin texts on separate sheets which could either be bound in separate sequences or interleaved, as in the present copy. The text length differed between the two languages, resulting in blank pages, and Aldus, in a moment of frugality, decided to fill the space -- in the middle of the work of St. Gregory -- with a the Gospel of St. John. Space was not sufficient, however, to finish the Gospel, and Aldus promises in his preface to finish it in an edition (unrealised) of Nonnus Panopolitanus's verse. Ahmanson-Murphy 67; Renouard Alde, 46:4.
