GEORGE BERNARD SHAW (1856-1950)
One-page autograph note in red ink signed with initials 'GBS', subscribed to a typewritten letter from Shaw to the Editor of Answers, 4, 23 May 1938, [n.p.], framed and glazed.
Endorsing his short typewritten remark reading: 'If Answers really started Lord Northcliffe on his career, it has much to answer for. However, long life to it!', Shaw justifies his comments: 'This is not necessarily uncomplimentary. It is the simple truth', explaining it as a reaction to an earlier comment: 'when I was rising into fame as a playwright, when he [Northcliffe] refused to print his enthusiastic critics notices of my plays on the grounds that he was not going to let his paper (the Daily Mail) be used to advertize [sic] a damned Socialist', expressing his indifference at whether his remark is published or not.
