Lot Essay

The present view looks up College Street towards Greenwich Hospital, with the Greenwich Market building on the right. The west gate of the Hospital (later the Royal Naval Hospital and today Greenwich University) is shown with its two stone globes, one celestial, the other terrestrial. Joseph Kay, surveyor to the Hospital, laid out College Approach (known initially as Clarence Street), Nelson Street, and King William Street following the passing of an Act in 1831. The Market building on the right was built that year.
