CARY'S NEW CELESTIAL GLOBE ON WHICH are carefully laid down the whole of the STARS AND NEBULAE contained in the Catalogues of Wollaston, Herschel, Bode, Piazza, Zach &c. calculated to the Year 1820. Made & Sold by J.& W. Cary, No.181 Strand London 1818
A 15-inch (38.1cm.) diameter celestial table globe made up of twelve hand coloured engraved gores laid to the ecliptic poles, the colures graduated in degrees, the equatorial graduated in hours and in degrees in both directions, the ecliptic graduated in days of the month and of the houses of the Zodiac with names in Latin for the former and symbols for the latter, a note beneath the trade label reading Greek letters or figures prefixed to the Stars signify from the British Catalogue a Stroke drawn under the figures thus 450 De La Caille, H Hevelius, M Mayer, CH C.Herschel & B Bradley., the constellations depicted by mythical beasts and figures and scientific instruments, the stars shown to seven orders of magnitude with nebulae, and variously labelled with Greek and Roman letters or underlining (numerous cracks to varnish and discolouration, several surface abrasions notably around poles, hour dial missing from North Pole, small dent with paper loss in southern hemisphere), the engraved brass meridian circle divided in four quadrants, the horizon with hand-coloured engraved paper ring graduated in degrees in two directions, days of the month and of the houses of the Zodiac with names, with wind directions, supported by four baluster turned mahogany legs united by cross-stretchers -- 22in.
