Lot Essay

Kriz, a native of Prague, studied typography and photography at the state school and later worked as the Paris correspondent for the Czech Press while studying at the l'École Cinématographique et Photographique. In 1952, he moved to Berkeley, California where he became an assistant to Dorothea Lange, and in 1974 became a professor of photography at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland.
