World War I Trench Art

An empty 75mm. French brass shell-case, with embossed decoration in the form of an oakleaf spray and a maidservant, carrying a tray with glass and bottle, being hotly pursued by a Grenadier in Napoleonic uniform and bearskin cap, and inscription GROGNARD de 1813; and a similar shell-case, also embossed in bas relief, depicting a French officer of World War I in uniform, wearing his Adrian helmet, being ogled by a scantily-dressed girl, with inscription BLEUET 1918, together with an entertaining typewritten letter, dated 9 May 1983 and signed L.P. Smellie, stating that these shell cases had been decorated for him by a French soldier in 1918 while attached to the Royal Serbian Army in Salonika and operating in support of a French Artillery Unit.
