A wooden shield, 15in. by 14in., faced with a shaped piece of cheetah- skin and mounted with a hardwood knobkerry, an assegai and a Martini-Henry bayonet, the shield also mounted with a semicircular white metal plaque (lacking one fixing-stud) inscribed RETRIEVED FROM ISANDLWANA/ZULULAND 1879 BY LT. COL. H. ALEXANDER/1ST D.. (illegible). A manuscript note on the back of the shield states: On 20 May 1879, Lt. Col. H. Alexander who Commanded the 1st Dragoon Guards arrived at Rorke's Drift with 634 men ... On May 21st they forded the Buffalo River and visited Isandlwana where they buried many of the remaining dead ... One squadron of Dragoons ... on June 2nd ... discovered the body of the French Prince Imperial Louis Napoleon ...
