Lot Essay

Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Samuel Raymond Jarvis, Kt., was born in 1790 and entered the 18th Foot as an Ensign in April 1806. Transferring into the 25th Foot in the following year, with which Regiment he served until placed on Half-Pay in 1816, he was present in the Martinique and Guadaloupe operations. In April 1817 he rejoined the Colours as a Captain in the 2nd Life Guards, with whom he served until March 1823 when he transferred to the 7th Light Dragoons. Appointed a Sheriff of Hampshire in 1834, Jarvis was knighted at St. James's Palace in September of the same year and attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Army in November 1851. Sir Samuel died at his residence in Ventnor, Isle of Wight in December 1868.
