Lot Essay

Captain Basil Culverhouse de Gex was originally commissioned into the East Lancashire Regiment and served with the 1st Battalion under Sir Robert Low in the Relief of Chitral operations of 1895. Sometime thereafter transferring into the Lancashire Fusiliers, he was advanced to Captain in June 1900 and 'specially detailed for duty with the Uganda Punitive Force. After the campaign against the Mad Mullah, Captain de Gex proceeded into the interior lion hunting. He was badly mauled by a lion and died from his injuries on 11 October [1901]' (The Times refers).
