Lot Essay

Major J.T. Chapman, [O.B.E.], served for just over 17 years in the ranks, gaining advancement to Battery Sergeant-Major in the mid-1890s. Commissioned as a Lieutenant in May 1899, he was promoted to Captain in July 1902 and to Major in July 1912, finishing his career with an O.B.E. just after the Great War. In addition to his services in South Africa, Chapman also saw action in India and Sierra-Leone.
