Lot Essay

Private Thomas Tuerlsey enlisted into the 3rd Regiment in May 1845, aged 18 years. A photocopied newspaper cutting which accompanies the lot states that he served for 'over 21 years with the Colours', afterwards joining the Royal Canadian Rifles with whom he served until 1886. Of his six sons, five chose the Army as a career, including the youngest, Frank Edwin Tuersley.

Captain Frank Edwin Tuersley was born in August 1881 and attested at Winchester for the Royal Artillery as a Boy Recruit in December 1895. A long served Regular by the outbreak of hostilities, he was advanced to Warrant Officer status in April 1915 and embarked for France in October of the same year. Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in October 1916, he retired in late 1920 with the rank of Captain.

Mrs. Florence Kate Tuersley was the wife of Captain Tuersley.
