2nd Lieutenant Robert Walter Meacock was born in Newport, Monmouthshire and originally enlisted into the Royal Fusiliers in September 1914. Commissioned two months later into the South Wales Borderers, he proceeded to France in May 1916 and served in the 5th and 6th Battalions prior to being invalided home in early 1917.
