With 60-bore octagonal sighted barrel stamped 'Syst.me Lemat B.t S.G.D.G. Paris' on the top flat, with rammer on the left side and 16-bore grapeshot barrel beneath, plain cylinder and action (left plate of the latter replaced), hammer with pivoting nose, chequered walnut grips, and pommel with integral lanyard ring (some light pitting), London proof marks

Lot Essay

Dr. Jean Alexandre Franois Le Mat first patented his revolver in America in 1856. The partnership with Charles Frederic Girard dates from 1860, and production was limited to about 3,000 revolvers between 1862 and 1865
