Lot Essay

Thomas Robins born Charlton Kings, Near Cheltenham 3 February 1715/16 and died 1770 studied under a Hugenot fan painter.
There is a dismounted fan leaf by Robins with another view of Captain Henry Skillicorne's spa house at Cheltenham, at Cheltenham Museum, illustrated in Gardens of Delight, the Rococo English Landscape of Thomas Robins the Elder, by John Harris, 1978, plate 37. Another unsigned fan by Thomas Robins of elegant company visiting Ralph Allen's stone quarry at Prior Park was sold at Christie's, 6 November 1972, lot 172, 270 guineas. It is also illustrated in John Harris's book, plate 122 and in Collecting Fans, Susan Mayor, 1980, p.32
