FOURIER, Jean Baptiste Joseph (1768-1830). The Analytical Theory of Heat. Translated, with notes, by Alexander Freeman. Cambridge: C. J. Clay for the University Press, 1878.
8o (213 x 135 mm). Prize binding of contemporary calf, central gold-stamped arms of [Glasgow University], repeated in the upper compartment of gold-tooled spine, red morocco lettering-piece, marbled edges (rubbed, upper inner hinge split). FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, AN EVOCATIVE ASSOCIATION COPY. Thomson's earliest interests centered on questions drawn from Fourier's Thorie analytique de la chaleur and Laplace's Mcanique cleste, and his first published paper related to heat diffusion. He later succeeded in providing the mathematical proof for the second law of thermodynamics, first formulated by Sadi Carnot. Thomson was Professor of Natural Philosophy at Glasgow University from 1845 until the end of his life.
