Contemporary mottled calf, gilt panelled, with gilt central motif (very worn, spine missing, front cover detached and first few pages loose).
Third edition with Dutch text of Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium (Amsterdam, 1705), including the twelve additional plates by Merian's eldest daughter, Joanna. The "artistic grouping of the insects amidst the tropical flora makes this book one of the most beautiful and unusual in the whole range of natural history" (Landwehr). Uncolored copies are rare.
