JOYCE, James (1882-1941). Autograph letter signed ("James Joyce") to Wilhelm Herz (William H. "I HAVE WRITTEN TO MY GERMAN PUBLISHER ABOUT MY BOOK ['ULYSSES']"

The recipient Wilhelm Herz was a Swiss relative of Helen Joyce (the wife of James Joyce's brother George); he later Americanized his name to William Hartley. He first met Joyce in 1934 in Paris. It is in a letter of his to a family member (14 January 1941, see Letters, ed. R. Ellmann, vol. 3, p. 507) that we get a description of Joyce's death. Here Joyce writes: "Many thanks to you and your friend for copies of Politiken [a Copenhagen newspaper which had noted Joyce's recent visit to Denmark]. The letter to Lucia [his daughter] is just what I wanted. I have written to my German publisher about my book [Ulysses] and if and when I get a copy you will receive it. If not an English copy. Are the latter really not on sale in Cologne book shops. I mean, the Odyssey Press edition?..." Printed in Letters, ed. R. Ellmann, vol. 3, pp. 312-13.
