Lot Essay

In 1832 Captain Augustus Wathen produced sets of 30mm. scale cavalry, with which it was intended that the novice cavalry office could learn the rudiments of cavalry drill.

The hooks on the horses means a complete rank of sixteen can be moved at once with the aid of the wooden strips included in the box.

This set constitutes one of the earliest sets of 'toy' soldiers in solid cast form to be commercially sold, the label specifying two stockist in Piccadilly, London.
