Lot Essay

Previously sold in Hong Kong, 25 November 1981, lot 284.

This unusual enamelling style in which branches enamelled on the exterior extend over into the interior also appear on a group of famille rose 'peach' dishes and bowls, such as the 'peach' dish to be offered in these Rooms from the Robert Chang Collection, 2 November 1999, lot 515. The quality of enamelling on the present dish is superbly executed with a subtle combination of pink and white colours to enhance petal textures.

Another dish of this pattern in the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, Stockholm, is illustrated by J. Wirgin, Chinese Ceramics from the Axel and Nora Lundgren Bequest, col. pl. 8. A related yet larger (50.1 cm. diam.) Yongzheng-marked dish enamelled with magnolia and peonies is in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Kangxi, Yongzheng, Qianlong, p. 138, no. 147.
