A RARE FAMILLE ROSE BALUSTER VASE
IRON-RED XIANFENG SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD

Finely enamelled on the broad body with two clusters of flowering chrysanthemum, peony and magnolia, above bands of key-pattern and formal scrolling flowers reserved on a violet-blue-ground at the foot, the flared neck similarly decorated with formal scrolling foliage, pendent tassels and auspicious characters, and with scroll handles at either side

Lot Essay

Compare the Daoguang-marked vase, of similar design but with a taller neck, decorated with formal floral scrolls on a red ground instead of a blue, illustrated in Chugoku Toji Zenshu, vol. 21; another vase, of similar type but decorated with Immortals around the body, is illustrated by Geng Baochang, Mingqing Ciqi Jianding Qingdai Bufen, p. 152, in the section of Xianfeng wares.
