A BAMBOO CARVING OF AN IMMORTAL
17TH CENTURY

The figure exquisitely carved in the round seated at leisure leaning to one side against layered rockwork, clutching in the right hand a sprig of lingzhi fungus, the facial features finely detailed with the moustache and long beard framing an open mouth to give a laughing expression, wearing in a loose robe in falling rhythmic folds from the shoulders and gathered under his ample belly, the wicker basket placed by his feet contains a large peach, herbs and lingzhi fungus (small section of rockwork restuck)

Lot Essay

A similarly carved seated figure dated to the Kangxi period from the Wang Shixiang Collection capturing the same subject matter of an elderly man gathering herbs, is illustrated in Bamboo Carving of China, China Institute in America, 1983, fig. 16.
