Finely and deeply carved through the diaper ground to both sides with young boys at play, on hobby horses, practising acrobatics, playing musical instruments, acting out a drama, gathering flowers, picking fruit, or tending chickens and roosters, all within an elaborate garden landscape with pavilions and ornamental rocks framing each scene (minor repair)
6 in. (15 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

An identical box in mirror image is in the Chateau de Fontainebleau illustrated in Le Musee Chinois de l'imperatrice Eugenie, fig. 36, presumably from the Summer Palace.
