Lot Essay

"It's not a direct protest against society. I mean, my feelings about society are that you shouldn't be complacent and that the society is only what most people think it should be. And if you think something is wrong, you should stand up for that. But on the other hand, I would hate to be bitter about things. I want to enjoy life, even if life can be ugly. My main concern is not to become bitter on the one hand and not to be complacent on the other. I think to do that you need to feel quite strong in yourself. You need to have the confidence both to enjoy things, to get something out of them and also to have the courage of your convictions, if necessary. So for me my work is about me. So things that could make me feel vunerable, or maybe worry about - I hopefully turn them into something that I don't have to be running away from. And that makes me feel stronger and therefore, I can face the world. And I hope in a way that that's what people can find in the work. That you actually don't have to be cowering, that you can just look things in the eye and get on with it." (S. Lucas, in: I. Goetz, 'The work is my description of the world - Interview with Sarah Lucas', in: Art from the UK, Munich 1997, p.135)
