Lot Essay

Larionov and Gontcharova celebrated their arrival in Paris with a large exhibition of their theatrical work in May 1919 at the Galerie Barbazanges in rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. The impressive portfolio L'Art Décoratif Théatral Moderne was published cuncurrently with this exhibition. It comprised an essay about the two artists by Valentin Parnack, and a series of pochoirs and prints of several of their designs on display. The critical text discussed Larionov's theories about dance and theatre, and singled out the Russian artist as the initiator of new types of choreography that included dances based on free movements, types of gait, animal movements, mechanical dance, and social dance related to work.
