MAKER'S MARK OF EDME-FRANCOIS BALZAC, PARIS, 1771

On shaped-circular stepped bases, chased with bands of ovolo and tied reed rising to spiral fluting and knopped panelled stems headed by stylized shells with panels of pendant bellflowers below and spool form sockets with removeable shaped circular nozzles, fully marked on bases, sockets and nozzles, with the charge and discharge of Julien Alaterre--10 5/8in. Lot Essay

A pair of similar candlesticks by the same maker, 1761, was sold by Ader Picard Tajan, Paris, May 27, 1987, while another pair, with applied cartouches to the bases, 1767, was sold by Sotheby's, London, June 18, 1959, lot 61.
