Lot Essay

According to David Peters, the mark of an ermine found on the present cup and saucer is most probably that of Jean-Jacques Sioux, recorded at Vincennes and Svres as a painter of flowers 1752-1760.

See Wentworth, Christie's London, 8 July 1998, lot 89 for a Svres apple-green ground gobelet lait couvert of similar size, similarly dated and similarly finely painted with flowers. That example, accompanied by an elaborately pierced quatrefoil corbeille carre instead of the usual saucer, bore the painter's mark for Louis-Jean Thvenet, pre an, recorded at Vincennes and Svres 1741 and 1745-1777.
