Lot Essay

The present seaux were made for a service given by Louis XV to Queen Marie-Caroline of Naples and the Two-Sicilies upon the birth of her daughter Charlotte Louise for whom the king stood as godfather. Examples from the service are in the collections of the Louvre and the Muse des Arts Decoratifs. Cf. Versailles et les tables royales en Europe, XVIIme-XXIXme sicles, exhibition catalogue, Muse National des Chteaux de Versailles et de Trianon, Paris, 1993, p. 338.

The decoration is a variation of that originally conceived for a service supplied to Mme Du Barry in 1771. For a pair of half-bottle coolers from this service, see lot 56 in this sale.
