A GEORGE II KETTLE STAND AND LAMP
MAKER'S MARK OF WILLIAM CRIPPS, LONDON, 1745

The inverted pear shaped body elaborately chased with foliage and scrolls and with foliate scroll spout applied with a wild mask and issuing from applied foliage, with raffia-covered overhead swing handle and hinged cover applied with a finial formed of shells and rocaille, the circular stand on three multi-scroll and shell feet headed by animal masks, the sides pierced with rocaille and scrolls inhabited by dragons, with central baluster with removable and later hinged cap and handle, engraved each side and on the lamp cover with the monogram CR surmounted by a crown within an asymmetrical cartouche, the lamp engraved with a monogram AS surmounted by a crown, the base engraved EA Fs, marked under base and on stand--15in. (38cm.) high (gross weight 79oz., 2478gr.)

Lot Essay

The cyphers are those of Queen Charlotte, consort of George III and Princess Augusta Sophia, their eldest daughter. On her death in 1806 her silver was inherited by Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, whose initials appear under the base. (see footnote to lot 315).
