A FINE GOLD AND ENAMEL REVIVALIST FRINGE NECKLACE AND PAIR OF EAR PENDANTS
Signed by Carlo Giuliano

The flattened neck band with a line of blue and white enamel quatrefoils above delicate looped mesh chains suspending tiered pointed oval drops, some with bead and wirework decoration, interspersed with miniature blue, white and green disc, heart or flowerhead motifs, with double S clasp, the ear pendants en suite, all pieces signed with initials C.G., circa 1870, necklace 15½in. long, in original maroon leather fitted case with retailer's name C. Giuliano, 114 Piccadilly (ear pendants with later screw fitments)

The inspiration for this exquisitely made necklace is the Hellenistic gold example from Melos dating to the 4th Century B.C. Formerly in the collection of Alessandro Castellani, it was purchased from him by the British Museum in 1872. See G. Munn, Castellani and Giuliano, 1984, pls.119, 126, and Christie's London, 20 June 1990, lot 3
