Lot Essay

Compare the rectangular Canton enamel frame, with ornate top and bottom, which is in the Danish Kunstindustrimuseum and is illustrated by J. Wirgin, Fran Kina till Europa, 1998, no.259, p.243 (colour plate). According to Wirgin, this mirror can be dated to 1741, thanks to the surviving documents relating to the mirror and another very similar, which is in the C. L. Davids Collection in Copenhagen; they were both ordered, together with other similar mirrors, from 'Monsieur Attey' in Canton in spring 1941 by the Danish supercargo, Christen Lintrup, and were brought to Denmark on the Dronningen af Danmark in 1742. Mr. Wirgin explains that the documents state that by 1740, Lintrup owned several Canton enamel tables, four large enamel chandeliers and sixteen large wall lights.
