Lot Essay

The design for this service was taken from an engraving and the service was made, reputedly for the Royal Palaces of Portugal, to commemorate the unveiling of the equestrian statue of Dom Jos I of Portugal. The statue, by the sculptor Machado de Castro, was erected in Palace Square, Lisbon on 6th June 1775 during the festivities celebrating the reconstruction of Lisbon after the great earthquake of 1755. The rebuilding of the city was carried out under the orders of the Prime Minister, Marques de Pombal, whose portrait can be seen, beside an allegorical group, on the pedestal of the statue. It is now in the Praca do Comercio, on the banks of the River Tagus.

Other pieces from this service are illustrated by M. Beurdeley, op.cit., fig.52, p.76 (a plate); by J.A. Lloyd Hyde, R.R. Espirito Santo Silva and E.
