Lot Essay

Possibly inspired by Hildebrandt's watercolour 'A Gloria, Rio de Janeiro. April 1844', for which see G. Ferrez, O Brasil de Eduard Hildebrandt, Rio de Janeiro [nd], p. 59, kat. 38.

Goering made his first visit to South America in 1856, visiting Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. He returned in 1866, travelling through Venezuela in the footsteps of Humboldt for eight years, returning to Germany in 1874. The present oil, while apparently inspired by Hildebrandt, may have been executed by Goering in Brazil en route to Germany in late 1873.
