UNIQUE DIAMOND, CABOCHON RUBY AND ENAMEL TREE BROOCH

Designed as a single and circular-cut diamond and brown enamel apple tree bearing cabochon ruby fruit, with a man and a boy, in varicolored enamel, standing on the green enamel grass and looking up at the tree, mounted in platinum (enamel slightly chipped), circa 1938

Signed by Cartier

Provenance
Formerly the property of Kay Brown

As an agent in the entertainment business for over 50 years, the legendary Kay Brown had the uncanny ability to pick winners, in scripts and in people. As the East Coast representative for Selznick Pictures, she "discovered" and negotiated the original movie rights to "Gone With The Wind". Other well know winners were "Cimarron", "Rebecca" and "Intermezzo". However, her assessment of the 1938 Broadway hit "On Borrowed Time" was "...don't think it has a chance." In response, John Hay Whitney commissioned this apple tree brooch from Cartier for Miss Brown. The set featured an apple tree under which Gramps and Pud stand, contemplating Death, who is trapped in its branches.
