BRITISH ARCTIC EXPEDITION, 1875-1876

A stone china sauce-tureen and cover by W. T. Copeland & Sons, printed and painted in blue, with two leaf-moulded handles, printed "Artic Expedition 1875" 'garter' beneath a continuous entwined cable-pattern band and within blue borders and rims, the cover with loop handle, printed 'garter' badge above a cable-pattern border, Copeland Artic Expedition marks, printed 'Discovery' marks, indistinct impressed marks to base of tureen. (Cover and chip to rim carefully restored). -- 18cm. long.

Copeland produced individual services for both H.M.S. Alert and H.M.S. Discovery, each of the ships had their own headed embossed note-paper, and beer was supplied by Burton-on-Trent breweries, an indication of the effort that went into making life on board as civilised as possible, and of the importance that the Admiralty attached to the expedition.
