Lot Essay

A portrait of Prof. T.W. Edgeworth David, F.R.S., geologist on Shackleton's Nimrod expedition who led the summit party on the first ever ascent of Mount Erebus, reaching the summit on 10 March 1908. The portrait dates to the eve of midwinter when Shackleton and his party were wintering in the hut at Cape Royd's prior to the Shackleton's southern journey.
