Leonardi first begin to work for Cassiano in 1621, as well as producing drawings of song-birds for the Uccelliera, overo discorso della natura e proprietà di diversi Uccelli published in Rome in 1622 for Federico Cesi, Principal of the Accademia dei Lincei. Leonardi travelled with Cassiano to France in 1625, where he drew birds in the collection of King Louis XIII, a keen bird collector.
