A RUSSIAN ORMOLU-MOUNTED CEDAR CAMPAIGN DESK ON FOLDING STAND
Late 18th /early 19th Century
Inlaid overall with boxwood and green-stained lines, the rectangular top above a sloping and vertical double-hinged fall, enclosing a fitted interior with fourteen variously-sized drawers around a central cupboard, concealing a further drawer with six additional drawers, on a collapsible stand with rectangular upright and stretchers and folding flap-supports, the sides with oval carrying-handles, three interior drawers with Russian inscription to the underside 'upper on the left side', 'lower...side', and 'lower on the left side', restorations, two cross struts of stand replaced

Lot Essay

This unusual travelling campaign bureau reputedly belonged to the celebrated military commander Prince Kutuzov, the most famous general of his day in Russia who was instrumental in forcing Napoleon's retreat from Moscow in 1812.
