Each with channelled frame, cartouche-shaped back, arms, sides and padded cushion upholstered with associated close-nailed gros point needlework, the toprail and shaped apron centred by a floral and foliate spray, the outscrolled arms above cabriole legs headed by flowerheads and terminating in scrolls, the decoration refreshed, both bergres with obliterated stamps, one front-rail stamped 'I. AVISSE', one back leg with restored break, previously green-painted

Jean Avisse, matre in 1745.

Jean Avisse, son or probably cousin of Michel Avisse, was the most celebrated menuisier of the Avisse family. Related to the Gourdin family by his marriage to Marie-Anne Gourdin, he was established at rue de Clry, and was still recorded at that address in 1796.
