An Unusual Carved Rock Crystal, Enamel and Diamond Pendant Necklace by Lalique
The carved rock crystal plaque of a bathing beauty within a green enamel border, two marquise-cut diamond accents and a further old triangular-cut diamond pendant, all suspended from the squared green enamel long link chain, circa 1905, with case marked R. Lalique, 40 Cours-la-Reine, Paris, with French assay marks, 42.0 cm long

Rock crystal and its ability to represent all that was ice, winter and water fascinated Lalique. He experimented extensively and this particular pendant is a fine example of superior craftsmanship. Once the intaglio was carved, he would layer a pale opal-coloured coating over it giving a frosted or iridescent quality and reduced the transparency. Then a second image would be carved to the front of the piece and an illusion of dimension was created. The remarkable effect can be seen in similar pendants as noted:
