Lot Essay

According to the vendor, this jacket was given by Hepburn to Cecil Landeau who worked with Hepburn in 1949 when, aged nineteen, she had a dancing role in a musical revue he was producing in London called Sauce Tartare. Landeau spotted Hepburn's potential and helped to raise her profile by having her photographed by Anthony Beauchamp for Tatler. Their association continued until a tour Landeau was planning fell through in early 1950, and Hepburn began her film career by landing a small part in Michael Balcon's classic Ealing comedy The Lavender Hill Mob, 1951.
