Lot Essay

We are grateful to Mr. Fred Meijer for the attribution, having examined the picture in person. The artist might be identifiable as the sculptor and painter Barend van Eysen (d. 1702) who is recorded in Haarlem in 1679 but by whom no pictures are known. The author of the present painting was clearly influenced by the vanitas still lifes of Edwaert Collier (1640-after 1707) and Jan Vermeulen (1638-1674).
