Lot Essay

In a letter dated 19 January 1998, Professor Minna Heimburger fully accepted the attribution, on the basis of photographs. She remarks on the stylistic and compositional similarities to Ceruti's work, and notes that 'the building in the middle distance to the right' recurs almost identically in other paintings by the artist. The attribution has been queried independently by Professor Mina Gregori, who feels, also on the basis of photographs, that the picture is the work of one of Ceruti's pupils.

We are very grateful to both Professor Heimburger and Professor Gregori for their assistance with this lot.
