Provenance
A copy of a handwritten letter by Hugh W. Parker accompanies this lot. Dated 29 January 1929 it reads: "This brick was taken from the corner of the wall leading downstairs to the Temple of the Moon Gods, in Ur of the Chaldees, and the birthplace of Freemasonry. Its age is 2000-3000 B.C. In 1921 when the Temple was found and partly cleared, large Masonic pilgrimages from all over Mesopotamia paid it a visit and on the same Sunday every year since..."
